Introduction: What is Steampunk?
Steampunk is a speculative genre usually set in Victorian or Edwardian England, or it's colonies (such as colonial America) and usually during the industrial revolution. Technology is centred around the use of steam engines, such as steam-powered air-ships or steam trains, and also clock-work mechanics such as wind-up automatons etc. True Steampunk is set in a dystopian world where the "average working class man" struggles to survive plague and pollution and despotism and poverty and class division and war. Also known as retro-futurism, steampunk draws inspiration from the works of H. G. Wells or Jules Verne. Noticable works in recent years are the movies,
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
,
Wild Wild West
and Disney's
Treasure Planet
and
Atlantis,
and the books,
Perdido Street Station
by China MiƩville, and the
Leviathan
series by Scott Westerfeld.
